Black Words Matter

Photo by Clay Banks on Unsplash

We are at a pivotal moment in our collective consciousness, with Black Lives Matter becoming the focus of a cultural reckoning. It's prompting us all to have conversations online, with family, with friends and with ourselves. Young people are at the forefront of making these conversations happen and we want to hear what you have to say.

BYFN are looking to work with poets/spoken word artists who have been motivated to create work in response to the Black Lives Matter movement to collaborate on short films platforming their work. We want to pair poets with our filmmakers to collaborate on how to visually convey the poetry alongside the performance of the piece so that we can share the perspective of young people's thoughts and feelings on the matter.

  • Poets must be from Birmingham and the surrounding areas and under 30 years old

  • The poems will be selected by our network members

  • We are limited in the number of films that we can make

  • Our shoots will be conducted in line with Covid 19 precautions

  • The videos will be hosted on our YouTube channel and shared across our social media platforms, with the possibly in the future when we can resume screenings they may be shown in front of audiences

We have no funding, just an eagerness to collaborate and hopefully make some interesting and challenging work

You can submit in anyway you'd like - written, audio or video, however you're comfortable sharing your work

If you would like to submit work or have any questions please contact Cassie at byfn.contact@gmail.com

Submissions close at midnight on Monday 6th July
